Traditions of the North American Indians Vol 1 James Athearn Jones Books
I have several books on Native American myths and traditions. Some are on specific tribes. So I was expecting the book by James Athearn Jones (1830) to be the same but just fill in information for the Northeast Indian Nations. I was surprised to find this presentation is quite different from other books. First it tells the story of how they had to locate the right person to collect the tales. They needed a unique person that had a variety of skills form religious to martial to great listening and scribing skills. When they got down to telling the stories I was intrigues with many of the concept as to why people had different skin color to many myths that paralleled Greek myths. The writer also has plenty of footnotes so the book for the most is annotated.
I was really amazed to find out how many tribes made up the different nations and how they interacted with each other. This social interaction is actually more interesting than the stories told.
No pictures or illustrations. Each tale title is underlined. But you will not be disappoints as you will want to read from front to back. One of my purchase criteria is Kindle text-to-speak enabled.

Traditions of the North American Indians Vol 1 James Athearn Jones Books Reviews
Some good info from older times. Sources sited. A must read for those who need to look back at our Ancestors.
Great read
I recently wrote a report, for a history class, on the plight of the Indians as the US was settled. I found this book to be informative, and would recommend it to others who are doing the same or simply reading for their own information. I believe all three of the books in this series are worth the money and time.
This book is not really explaining any particular traditions for the North American Indians. It just continues to ramble on how one tribe knows another tribe and then provides information on which other books can be referred to concerning the tribe information.
To bad the North American Indian does not document their own traditions. At least I get a view of something I know nothing about. I certainly wish the North American Indian would share information about their traditions. Often the outsider gets it wrong and that is all that we have to believe!
I have used for reading material and have always been very pleased with my reader.
A non-fiction documentary of native American culture, when little was known about these wonderful people. Not an easy read, but an informative and thoughtful one. I will keep it in my library for reference.
